Whilst rocking your grandchild, sing a lullaby softly to them this creates a sense of contentment. Your grandchild will learn the sound of your voice quicker the more you sing and talk to them.
Another method is to read them a bedtime story. This is an important stimulation as it imprints words in the baby’s brain and hearing different emotions and expressive sounds fosters social and emotional development.
When you snuggle down with your grandchild to read them a story or to sing them a lullaby, your bond will be stronger between you.
Babysitting needn’t be scary
Parents often rely on their child’s grandparents to babysit when they are out for dinner, on holiday or just need a ‘breather’. However, grandparents can often be scared to babysit if they haven’t looked after a baby since their own child was born. As long as you stay calm and think ahead you will be able to thoroughly enjoy your time with your grandchild. It can be challenging but also very rewarding.
Make sure you have the parent’s contact details written down and have directions to the nearest doctors or hospital. Child proof your home by placing a safety gate on the stairs, covering electrical outlets and maybe attach corner and edge bumpers on the corners of furniture.
