Look after number one

Number 1
You don’t want to miss your grandchild’s first words, when they begin to walk or when they start school and you want to make a collection of fond memories with them as they grow up so look after number one. The best way to do so is to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

 People over the age of 50 should take extra care with their heart so eat a diet low in saturated fat, sodium and calories.
 Oily fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and studies have shown that omega-3 may help support cardiovascular health, brain function and immune health, so try to eat oily fish twice a week. Two of the richest sources of omega-3 are herring and mackerel.

Kwai plus Omega-3 contains 500mg of high quality omega-3 fatty acids derived from saltwater deep-sea fish sources, including herring and mackerel.
 Research has shown that garlic contains a powerful ingredient called allicin which has heart health benefits and it may also help maintain cholesterol levels. If you don’t fancy eating raw garlic, supplements are available for an odour free way to enjoy its heart health benefits. Look for a supplement with a guaranteed high allicin yield to ensure maximum benefit, such as Kwai plus Omega-3.

 Experts recommend we take 10,000 steps a day to help maintain a healthy heart.  Try to walk every day, even if it just to pop to the shops, get some fresh air or to visit a friend or family member.
 Keep an eye on your alcohol consumption - a safe limit of alcohol for men is no more than three to four units of alcohol per day, and for women, no more than two to three units per day. Moderate consumption of alcohol (between one and two units of alcohol a day) may help to reduce the risk of heart disease in men over the age of 40 and women after the menopause.  The list below shows the number of units of alcohol in various drinks:
- A pint of ordinary strength lager or bitter contains around two units.
- A pint of ordinary strength cider contains around two units.
- A 175ml (standard) glass of red or white wine contains around two units.
- A pub measure of spirits contains around one unit.
- An alcopop contains around one and a half units.

 Everyone knows smoking is bad for your health and can cause a variety of health problems, including heart disease. The list below details the health problems and diseases smoking can cause:
- lung cancer
- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- heart disease
- stroke
- impotence
- osteoporosis (brittle bones), making them more susceptible to fractures
- cervical cancer in women

It is important for your own health to quit smoking but it is important for your grandchild’s health too. Passive or second-hand smoking can also cause serious health risks.
Quitting can be very difficult but the NHS can help with their Quit Kit which you can order for free. The kit includes the below:
