A heart healthy appetite

Stop! Step away from the biscuit tin. Exercise can be hungry work, but before you reach for a sugary fix and undo all your hard work, consider these healthier alternatives.

Foods such as cakes and biscuits are high in saturated salt, sugar and fat and so are not only highly calorific but may be detrimental to your heart health and may result in increased cholesterol levels. Make sure your kitchen cupboards are stocked with foods and ingredients that won't undo all the goodness of your heart healthy exercise.

  • Blueberries

Why not start your day as you mean to go on and sprinkle a handful of blueberries over your wholegrain cereal or bowl of porridge. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants so can help you eat your way to a healthier heart as well as contributing to one of your five a day

  • Nuts and seeds

When you are craving a mid-morning snack, opt for a small handful of nuts and seeds which are rich in heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids and polyunsaturated fats. Avoid salted or sugared varieties which are high in calories, which outweigh the health benefits

  • Leafy greens

Lettuce, broccoli and spinach are all rich in vitamins and antioxidant which are good for your heart. Why not be more adventurous and try other leafy greens such as kale, Swiss chard and rocket for a tasty change? Add them to wraps, soups and stir fries or simply steam for easy ways to incorporate these super foods into your diet

  • Enriched dairy foods

Choosing low fat varieties of milk, yogurts and margarine spreads are an easy way to look after your heart on a daily basis. Plant sterols have also been found to have cardiovascular benefits as they may help lower cholesterol levels and can be found in some dairy mini drinks, milk and margarine spreads

  • Garlic

Garlic contains a powerful ingredient called allicin which has heart health benefits and may help maintain cholesterol levels . Cooking garlic limits the amount of allicin contained within the cloves so if you don't fancy eating raw garlic or for an odour-free way to enjoy its heart health benefits, supplements are available. Look for a supplement with a guaranteed high allicin yield to ensure maximum benefit.
