Exercise
The heart is a muscle and it needs to be exercised in order to stay healthy. Physical exercise not only reduces risk of a heart attack but makes you look and feel great! Exercise doesn’t have to mean sweating in a gym for hours, it can be a swimming session, gardening, walking or climbing stairs. Find something you like and can stick to, and try to make it a habit.
Diet
In order to maintain a healthy weight it is important to make sure you are eating a balanced diet. Eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day has been shown to help lower the risk of coronary heart disease. Limiting your intake of saturated fat helps to keep cholesterol under control, while eating good fats such as those found in oily fish can improve chances of recovery following a heart attack. Try using herbs and spices to flavour food, as salt can increase blood pressure which increases the risk of heart disease.
Stress
Try to manage stress and anxiety, as while they are not a direct risk factor for heart disease, they can lead to other destructive behaviour such as smoking and drinking excess alcohol. Try identifying potentially stressful situations in advance, and try to find a way to cope. Relaxation activities such as yoga can help, or if you are constantly stressed it may be worth seeing your GP.
The next generation
I think that keeping children healthy and active is fundamental to prevent the next generation suffering from heart disease. Encouraging them to participate in sport and other physical activities develops strong muscles and bones, reduces body fat and limits the chance of many diseases in later life.
