Dr Serene Foster advises:
"Coping with joint problems can be difficult, but there are a number of steps you can take to help you get through it.
Lose the bulge
If you're overweight you could be putting excess strain on your joints and so it is important to make sure that you fall within the recommended Body Mass Index. If you do need to lose some weight, try eating a diet low in fat, salt and sugar. You may also want to consult your GP for advice and help with losing weight.
Exercise
It is important to exercise, especially if you are overweight, but in particular, weight-bearing exercise such as walking, running and weight training are the best forms of exercise to help maintain strong and healthy bones.
Get fishy
Eating the recommended two portions of oily fish a week can help boost your intake of omega 3 fatty acids which studies have shown may help to alleviate some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and could have beneficial effects on maintaining joint health. Mackerel, salmon, tuna and sardines all contain high levels. |
